Sacred Sīmā (Chapter House) – the Hall for Buddhist Ecclesiastical Performances
Another unique sacred element of the Mettāvihāra is the Sacred Sīmā (Chapter House) – the Hall for Buddhist Ecclesiastical Performances.
Spiritually and historically, this hall is a compulsory sacred entity of a Theravāda monastery. When senior monks (therā) perform ecclesiastical activities, such as, (1) Pabbajjā – ordination of a new entrant to the order (sāsana), (2) Upasampadā – upgrading a trainee (sāmaṇera) to the status of a monk (bhikkhu), (3) Pātimokkhadesanā – half-monthly recitation of the Buddhist code of discipline for monks and nuns (bhikkhubhikkuṇīvinaya) and (4) Formal meetings of senior monks and so on.
According to the 2600 years old Theravāda tradition, it is only with the formal establishment of the Sīmā that a vihāra (monastery or temple) become a full-fledged venue of real spiritual value.
At the opening of the Mettāvihāra in its new premises in Onaga Higashi in Hiroshima in May 2015, fifteen senior monks (Mahātherā) headed by Most Ven. Niyangoda Vijitasiri Anunāyaka Thera – the Deputy Chief Prelate of the Malwatta Chapter of (Kandy), Sri Lanka, established this new Sīmā at the Mettāvihāra. (by Ven.DP)
